Governor's Conference on Aging"Sights and Sounds of the New Century" was the theme for this year's Governor's Conference on Aging. The conference was held in North Platte at the Quality Inn and Suites on May 22-24, 2000.
This conference included workshops, round table discussions, speakers and entertainment that focused on new technologies and all types of communication. There was even a technology suite that displayed assistive technology devices for persons with various disabilities, communication technologies for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and computer and Internet technologies. This was a popular area to visit and pick up some new information.
There were a variety of workshops available to attend. I personally was able to attend the workshops titled, "Understanding and Accessing Your Medicare Rights and Benefits," "Proposed Changes in Social Security" and "The Ever-Changing Medicare Program." During each workshop I learned something new. My only wish was that I could have attended all of the 23 workshops that were offered. In addition to the workshops, the conference offered 18 different round table sessions. There were an amazing number of very interesting topics and presenters at this year's conference. I noticed a lot of NICA Volunteers attending the conference this year. Thank you for stopping by the new NICA Information Booth and saying hello.
Finally, I must mention that an award was given out this year that is of particular interest to NICA. That is because it was given to one of the NICA Regional Representatives, Marge Smith. Marge was awarded the Mary (Buford) Wilson Legal Services Award. This award is presented to recognize outstanding effort in providing legal services to older adults. Congratulations, Marge!!!
