THE NEBRASKA HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION, COUNSELING, AND ASSISTANCE (NICA) PROGRAM

DECEMBER 2002 NICA NEWS

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHTS

Ruby Hays

It was a busy October for NICA Volunteer Ruby Hays when she made four presentations to the public reaching over 265 people. She spoke to beneficiaries, family members and professionals about prescription drug assistance, fraud and abuse of Medicare, and Long-Term Care insurance in Lincoln and Grand Island. Ruby also reached a potential 30,000+ beneficiaries by appearing on a television show in Grand Island, a presentation at the Senior Center in Kearney, and at a health fair also in Kearney.

Shirley Lake

NICA Volunteer Shirley Lake reached 50 Medicare beneficiaries with her presentation at the Gothenburg Library in October. She discussed the NICA program with those in attendance.

Juanita Moore

The Montclair Senior Center in Omaha was the location of a presentation given by Juanita Moore to Medicare beneficiaries and pre-enrollees. Juanita covered the subject of Medicare fraud and abuse with over 20 people.

Jayne Prince

NICA Volunteer Jayne Prince gave three presentations in September and October! Jayne reached over 2,400 persons during a radio show in Columbus, and spoke to 28 people during public presentations in Norfolk and Tekamah. Jayne educated beneficiaries and their caregivers on Medicare and on Medicare fraud and abuse.

Jim Barry

NICA Volunteer Jim Barry gave a presentation on Medicare information and prescription drug assistance to 40 beneficiaries and pre-enrollees in October. Jim spoke to the IHCC Prime Time Group reaching 40 people.

Patricia Wilcox

Pat Wilcox gave four presentations in October and September and promoted NICA at two health fairs in October. Forty-one people were reached about Medicare fraud at the Lutheran Church of the Masters and the Infinia Family Council in Omaha. In addition, she also educated over 58 people on Medicare fraud and abuse at the Nye Square Resident Council in Fremont and at the Nebraska Skilled Nursing Home in Omaha. Pat also reached over 560 people at health fairs in Omaha at the AARP Forum and at the Countryside Church Fair.

Betty Stiles

Betty is really reaching out to help Medicare beneficiaries in the Beatrice area. The second Tuesday of each month, Betty spends a few hours at the Senior Center in Beatrice, available for NICA questions. The number and depth of questions she gets each month varies, but the seniors always know she'll be there to help if they need her. Betty also set up Medicare informational displays at the Beatrice Public Library and the Wymore Public Library, providing educational materials to residents of those two communities.
