Trainer Notes
Happy Holidays!
With the Fall Update trainings behind us, I've been busy answering all of your wonderful questions, preparing new 2003 materials, and starting to update the NICA manual for Spring 2003. We managed to make it through the five trainings with only one bad-weather day (of course, snow and ice hit the first training in Kearney, and the last training a month later in North Platte in mid-November was 60 degrees and sunshine!) We had a great attendance at the fall updates, with over 70% of all volunteers attending. Of course, we would like this number to reach 100%, so those of you who attended, please tell those who missed about all the exciting things you learned about Advanced Beneficiary Notices, the Nursing Home Quality Initiative, the Outpatient Prospective Payment System, Medicaid, Home Health, and everything in between!
Next spring, we will be having Update trainings for current volunteers and Initial trainings for new volunteers. If you have any recommendations for locations for the meetings, topics to be covered, or any comments on the Update training you attended this fall, please let me know. It was great to meet most of the NICA volunteers in person, and I was impressed by the depth of experience and knowledge possessed by the volunteers I met at the trainings. Some of the successful, innovative outreach efforts were inspiring. I am currently finalizing a few answers to the many good questions we discussed at the trainings, and you can be looking in your mailbox to receive those soon.
Take care, and I'll see you in 2003!
In Memoriam: Wilma Barry
Dedicated NICA volunteer Wilma Barry passed away Sunday, November 17, 2002, in Mission, Texas. Wilma and her husband Jim have been active NICA volunteers since 1995 -- counseling beneficiaries, assisting with paperwork application processes, giving public presentations, and setting up display booths with Medicare information at fairs. Wilma traveled to Texas with Jim to spend each winter, and they continued their volunteer outreach efforts while there. A memorial service will be held for Wilma on May 24, 2003. Our sympathies go out to the Barry family.
