THE NEBRASKA HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION, COUNSELING, AND ASSISTANCE (NICA) PROGRAM

MARCH 2002 NICA NEWS

GOLD RECORDS

Record 1/02 (D. White): Client purchased a policy on surgeries in October 2001. Policy paid a percentage of allowable surgeries with a maximum benefit payment of $2,400. The policy paid minimal amounts on dental, x-ray, and some screening tests. Client decided he would cancel the policy which cost $109 per month because he didn't think the benefits were worth the premium. NICA Volunteer advised him that if he needed further assistance to call again.

Hospital-Surgical insurance benefits are not designed to complement Medicare as the benefits in a Medicare supplement policy would.

Record 11/01 (B. Hamilton): Client was concerned about letter from HHSS saying client was no longer eligible for payment of Medicare Part B premium. NICA Volunteer assisted client in filling out HHSS forms for review of case and arranging for meeting with caseworker for interview. Payments reinstated.

The Part B premium is $54 per month in 2002, which could mean a savings to clients of $648 per year if they are eligible for one of the Medicare Savings Programs with Medicaid.

Record 12/01 (J. Barry): Client was found to be a diabetic and NICA Volunteer assisted her in ordering materials needed to test her blood sugar.

From now on, the supplier, not the beneficiary, will need to order and file the claims with Medicare DMERC (Durable Medical Equipment supplier). NICA Volunteers can still follow-through with the pharmacist or supplier to see that the claims are filed.
